County Poster Work!

Third and fourth graders are busy putting final touches 

on their county posters and preparing commercials they

hope will entice others to want to visit to their county!

Auger, Auger, Auger!

In the book Green Mountain Hero, Amos and Solomon Story

used an "auger" to drill holes for pegs to secure the beams together.  

Third and fourth graders tried out an auger and found out just how 

tough it is to drill a hole using this tool.

And to think this tool was once once "high tech!"

Perimeter and Area of the Story Family Cabin!

Third and fourth graders are reading historical fiction book

Green Mountain Hero.  This book tells of the Story family's 

move from Salisbury, Connecticut to Salisbury, Vermont in 1774.

Third graders read that the Story family's cabin dimensions were 16' X 24'.

They decided to see what this would look like, so they worked together to 

measure out and lay masking tape in a 16' X 24' rectangle 

It was hard to believe a family of seven lived in a cabin that size.

Next task:  Find the "perimeter" and "area" of the

Story family cabin.

Third graders first sketched the dimensions of the Story 

family cabin onto centimeter grid paper.  They then figured 

out the perimeter. Base Ten pieces were then used to find 

the area of the cabin.  The results:

Dimensions - 16' X 24'

Perimeter - 80 feet

Area - 384 square feet

"Favorite Season" Poems

"Favorite Season" poems were written by third and fourth graders

after reading the book From Dawn till Dusk written by 

Vermont author Natalie Kinsey-Warnock and illustrated

by Vermonter Mary Azarian.

Fall

Golden leaves falling from the sky

Hot bacon sizzling and popping on the stove

First shots of hunting season ring out

Cool winds of fall are blowing

Freshly frying hot sausage

Fall is a wonderful season!
